I won't be buying a Switch 2
I won't buy a Switch 2 at launch, and unless things change a bit I doubt I'll get one at all. This is remarkable only because I own every Nintendo console since the N64.
I bought an N64 in around 1998 to play Zelda: OoT. In the 80s I had cousins with a NES and would play it when visiting, but had never owned a Nintendo console before the N64. Then I bought a GameCube as soon as it came out and loved it. I bought a Gameboy Pocket and every iteration of GBA, several DSs and 3DSs. I bought a Wii, Wii U and a Switch and Switch Lite. I think over the years I've bought 16 different Nintendo consoles, if I include all the handhelds.
But the Switch 2 is getting a lot of grief after the announcement, and I agree with most of it. It's too little, too late and most importantly is way too expensive.
Last year, after finding that Nintendo weren't really offering me anything affordable to play, or more specifically, anything of value for money, I bought my first ever Xbox, a series X. And I have GamePass and I find that is pretty good value. And then late last year when it became available in Australia I bought a SteamDeck and this has been a game changer, literally and figuratively.
The Deck lets me buy good value for money indies from the stupidly extensive catalogue (basically every game comes out on PC if not immediately, then eventually... except Nintendo games) and they look fantastic on a handheld. Why on Earth would I buy a Switch 2, where the games are twice the price and look and play the same? And the console itself is about the same price as the Deck was... grr.
Oh well.
